Comline News: Fowden Motorsport Participate in JD Tyres Welsh Tarmacadam Rally Championship 2016

2016-09-08 16:47:16

Bob Fowden and co-driver Paul Wakely have continued their charge to take victory in the 2016 JD Tyres Welsh Tarmacadam Rally Championship, which the Llanelli based driver also won in 2015 at the wheel of his Subaru Impreza.

The recent Old Forge Garage Mewla Stages were held over the high speed ribbons of asphalt that snake over the military ranges of Mynydd Epynt, above Sennybridge Camp in mid Wales.

2016 saw the Fowden Motorsport Team upgrade to a Subaru Impreza WRC model, supported by Comline Auto Parts, Kumho Tyres and the NGK Company. The Welsh duo have taken championship victories in six of the rounds thus far, these include:

  • Season opening Rali Cwm Gwendraeth at the Pembrey Motorsports Centre
  • PTMC National Tour of Epynt
  • Harlech Stages in North Wales
  • Dale Stages in Pembrokeshire
  • Harry Flatters Rally on the Epynt Ranges

The latest round saw the Fowden Motorsport Team return to the Epynt Ranges for the Mewla Stages, where the Comline Auto Parts backed Impreza WRC took third place overall. The class victory has given the crew another maximum score in the Welsh Championship which extended their lead in the series.

The event ran in mixed conditions, with rain making the stages slippery in between outbreaks of glistening sunshine. Thankfully, later stages did dry-out which increased the speed of the race. After a delayed start, the Fowden/Wakely Subaru WRC steadily moved up the order, finishing in third place on stage three and second place a stage later.

The Impreza, supported by Comline Auto Parts, held their impressive placing until the seventh of the eleventh special stages, even in the face of an unfortunate windscreen wiper failure. With visibility poor for co-driver Wakely, the Fowden Motorsport Team dropped to third position. A wrong tyre choice in the changing weather conditions saw the team drop around seventeen seconds against the Subaru of Steve Simpson and, despite a fight back by the Welsh crew, the placing remained the same to the finish.

Maximum points in the Welsh series and the class win (by almost three quarters of a minute) were acceptable compensation and strengthened the Fowden Motorsport Team’s grip on the Welsh title. With just two more rounds to go, the Peter Lloyd Stages on home ground at the Pembrey Circuit and the Glyn Memorial Stages in North Wales, the Fowden Motorsport Team look set to triumph.
