1,500 claims per day

Prime minister David Cameron has pledged to tackle spurious whiplash claims as part of his latest drive to "cut red tape".

The Tory leader said that the UK is the "whiplash capital of Europe", with more than 1,500 such claims per day.

Mr Cameron said the government is looking at a variety of options including using improved medical evidence, technological breakthroughs, setting thresholds for claims or the speed of accidents.

According to ABI figures, the average motor insurance bill today is £410 - up 17 per cent rise on last year – and Mr Cameron said that whiplash claims add to £90 to each insurance premium.

"I am determined to tackle this damaging compensation culture which has been pushing up premiums," he said.

"I want to … free up businesses from the stranglehold of health and safety red tape."

Today (February 14th), Downing Street has been hosting an insurance summit where Mr Cameron has been meeting insurance industry, consumer and business groups.
